As a rookie with the Montreal Canadiens, Thomas became the first former Badger to win the Stanley Cup. Thomas played in 10 regular-season games in the 1972-73 season, going 8-1 with a 2.37 goals-against average. However, he didn't appear in a postseason game as the Canadiens defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2, to win their second Stanley Cup Final in three seasons.
