The Baraboo girls swimming team got a taste of some of the toughest teams in the state on Saturday when the Thunderbirds competed at Shorewood’s Small School State Invitational.

Four of the teams ranked in the top five of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Division 2 poll competed, including No. 4 Baraboo, which took sixth place with 195.5 points. Top-ranked Madison Edgewood took the title by storm with 367 points, followed by McFarland (258), No. 2 Whitefish Bay (237), No. 5 Tomahawk (220) and Eisenhower (210.5) to round out the top five. A total of 19 teams competed in the invite.

Baraboo had two second-place finishes on the day, one from junior Kirby Tock in the 100 yard butterfly. Tock touched the wall in 1 minute, 0.23 seconds to take finish behind Whitnall’s Nicole Beckman (59.13). The other runner-up showing came from junior Taylor Bradley, who took second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.65. She was only behind Edgewood’s Jenna Silvestri (1:08.33).

The T-Birds kicked off the invite with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Senior Mackenzie Koehler (29.16), Bradley (31.48), Tock (26.83) and junior Hannah Vittengl (25.83) raced to a time of 1:53.3 to give their team 30 points off the bat. Freshman Naomi Pelland (26.56), senior Danielle Crum (26.11), sophomore Giselle Riem (26.66), and Bradley (26.59) saw the same result in the 200 free relay, taking fourth with a time of 1:45.92. Koehler, Pelland, Tock and Vittengl went on to take sixth place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:49.75 to tack on 26 points.

In other individual events, Koehler took seventh in the 200 free (2:01.71), while Tock took 10th in the 200 IM (2:22.15). In the 50 free, Pelland took 10th (26.79) and Riem was 12th (27.0), before Vittengl took 10th in the 100 free (57.63). In the 100 backstroke, Koehler was sixth (1:03.09), while Vittengl took 10th in the 100 breast (1:15.13).

Baraboo will host Lodi on Tuesday for its final dual meet of the season before traveling to UW-Platteville on Saturday for an invitational.
