The Baraboo prep baseball team dug itself an early hole and couldn’t climb out in an 11-4 Badger North loss to Waunakee.

“They’re the best team in the conference; there’s no doubt about that,” T-Birds coach Steve Considine said. “We really felt we had some opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on, but in the end, they did outhit us and made plays that we didn’t make late in the game.”

The T-Birds surrendered five runs in the first inning, forcing them to play from behind from the get-go. Baraboo scored three in the second to make it 5-3, but could get no closer.

“We gave up five runs. They’re not going to show up as errors, but just on mental miscues, bloop hits, we really wish we could have gotten out of that first inning with less than five runs from them,” Considine said. “But for us to respond with three in the top of the second made us feel really good.”

Waunakee strung together some hits late in the game as well, tacking on three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to seal the deal. Jack Macdonald, Zach Kline, Dylan Barganz and Quinn Mueller all recorded RBIs to lead Baraboo.

The T-Birds (8-11 overall, 0-11 Badger North) will get another shot for their first conference win of the season on Thursday when they travel to DeForest.
