The Baraboo girls basketball team struggled to slow down Marshall on Saturday.

The unbeaten Cardinals consistently broke Baraboo’s press on the way to handing the Thunderbirds a 91-60 loss at Baraboo High School. Baraboo fell to 0-3 on the season, while Marshall improved to 3-0 and is beating teams by an average margin of 31.7 points per game.

The T-Birds stayed competitive early, trailing 10-7 after Haley Hannagan drove and scored with about 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The Cardinals answered with a 10-0 run to build a 20-7 lead before Baraboo fought back. The T-Birds forced a Marshall timeout when Megan Horstman recorded a steal and scored to cut the deficit to 23-17 with 7:10 to play in the first half.

But that was as close as Baraboo would get, as Marshall closed the half with a 26-6 run to open up a 49-23 halftime lead. Freshman guard Mia Morel punctuated the Cardinals’ spurt with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the left wing.

The T-Birds never threatened in the second half, as Marshall stretched its lead to as many as 37 points and scored 91 for the second time this season.

Baraboo gave up more than 90 points for the second straight game after suffering a 100-46 home loss to Beaver Dam on Nov. 21. The T-Birds are giving up 85.3 points per game in their 0-3 start as they are working on adjusting to their new trapping, pressure defense.

Morel led the Cardinals with 23 points. Laura Nickel added 12 points for Marshall, which continually got to the basket and scored 91 points despite making just three 3-pointers.

The T-Birds struggled to hit shots, making just three 3-pointers and shooting 5-of-13 from the free throw line.

Lexi Johnson paced Baraboo with 21 points, while Hannagan added 18 points. Lia Kieck returned from injury and scored seven points in her first game of the season, while Horstman chipped in six points, Abby Moon had five points and Lindsay Johnson finished with three points.

Baraboo will return to the court on Tuesday for a home non-conference game against Stoughton.
