The inaugural girls basketball Badger Conference Challenge didn’t go as planned for Baraboo.

The Thunderbirds never found their footing, scoring a season-low 26 points in Friday’s 58-26 loss to Watertown at Stoughton High School.

The game was never in doubt, as Watertown (7-6) took a 26-11 lead into halftime and continued to pull away to hand Baraboo (2-12) its fourth straight loss.

Only four T-Birds scored in the loss, as Baraboo made seven field goals — including four 3-pointers — and shot just 8-of-19 from the free throw line. Lia Kieck and Lexi Johnson led the way with nine points each, while Abby Moon had six and Lindsay Johnson added two.

Baraboo’s previous season low came in a 60-41 loss at Cambridge on Dec. 28.

Jenna Koepp made five of Watertown’s nine 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points. Lauren Burd scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half, while Teya Maas finished with 10 points for the Goslings.

Friday’s game was a matchup between the seventh-place teams in the Badger North Conference and the Badger South Conference, as each team has compiled a 1-6 record halfway through conference play.

The Goslings, in their first year as a member of the Badger South, evened the Badger Challenge at 1-1. Mount Horeb, which is currently in eighth place in the Badger North, earned a 37-32 win over Fort Atkinson in the opening game of the event. The final six games of the challenge will be held on Saturday.

The T-Birds will return to action when they visit Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln on Tuesday for a non-conference game. Baraboo will resume Badger North play at Beaver Dam on Thursday.
