State Sen. Luther Olsen's job is on the line today, and a substantial portion of Sauk County voters will help determine whether he keeps it.

Polls in Senate District 14 will be open today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Challenging Olsen, a Republican from Ripon, is state Rep. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo.

Observers believe a heavy turnout is likely, as the national political spotlight - along with millions of political action committee dollars - have been focused on the state recall races.

But other than a primary race July 12, in which Clark defeated "fake" Democrat Rol Church, a recall election of this scope is unprecedented in state history.

Only a portion of eastern Sauk County is in the 14th District; most of the county's remaining area is in the 17th Senate District, which does not have a pending recall election.

Sauk County is one of 10 counties that lie partly or wholly within the 14th District. The others are Adams, Columbia, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca and Waushara.

There are five other state Senate recall elections in Wisconsin today, all involving Republican incumbents facing Democratic challengers. The other districts are Nos. 2, 8, 10, 18 and 32.
