A Madison man who died Saturday evening after falling off a bluff in Devil's Lake State Park has been identified as Macklin B.W. Nesst.
The Sauk County Coroner identified the 27-year-old, who fell 50 feet off a bluff near a popular rock formation in the state park known as Devil's Doorway. The area features a trail that traverses high cliffs with sheer drop-offs.
Department of Natural Resources spokesman James Dick said Nesst was climbing around the rock formation when he fell around 6:15 p.m.
Park visitors attempted CPR on Nesst while 911 was called, Dick said.
Steve Schmelzer, the park's superintendent, said it's the first death at the park this year. He said rangers were notified of the incident by 911 dispatchers.
State park staff and the Baraboo Fire and Rescue Department responded to the incident, but Nesst died at the scene, Dick said.
