Elaine Katherine Pierce, 87, of Baraboo, passed away on Thursday evening, Nov. 2, 2017, at St. Clare Meadows.
Elaine was born March 2, 1930, to John & Mae (Tooley) Litscher on the Sauk Prairie at home by Pine Hollow where Badger Ordnance stood. The Litschers moved near the marshes east of Baraboo by the Butterfield Bridge on County Highway U when they were evicted from the powder plant land. She and her brother, Robert “Bob,” were the last two on the home farm with their father and here she was known a lot of the time as “Mouse” and by many of her friends all her life.
Here in Baraboo, she met and married James E. Pierce; they were married for 53 years. She has two children, Ralph D. and Kenneth J. In 1962, she and Jim decided to return to agriculture along with Jim’s participation in Pierce’s Super Market. They purchased the old apple orchard at 707 South Blvd. and rebuilt it into a first-rate orchard. They moved in 1977 to Hatchery Road, where with their son Kenneth they enlarged Pierce’s Hereford Haven. Here they concentrated on raising Polled Hereford breeding stock to this day. She along with her husband and son Ralph, with his wife, Joan, established Pierce’s Supper Club restaurant from 1979 to 1995.
Elaine loved bowling with the ladies’ league at the Elks Club, snowmobiling, raising apples and cows, and loving her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, Ralph (Joan) Pierce and Kenneth (Sandra) Pierce both of Baraboo; three grandsons, Nathan (Amy) Pierce of Deforest, James (Veronica) Pierce of Baraboo and Travis (Megan) Pierce of Baraboo; sisters-in-law, Joan (Leroy) Litscher, Patricia Mueller of Baraboo and Patricia Pierce of Baraboo; brother-in-law, William (Phyllis) Pierce of Reedsburg; special friends, Ron and Bev Federman of Baraboo; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents John and Mae Litscher; her brothers, LeRoy, Robert (Marge) and John (Joyce); and sisters, Lorene (Royce) Harrison and Evelyn (Orlin) Trager.
