President Donald Trump favors teachers being armed to protect their students. He said that many teachers are ex-services personnel, thus familiar with guns. I am a veteran who was also a teacher. Was I qualified to use a pistol to defend my pupils? Probably not.
I trained with and used rifles, automatic rifles, carbines and submachine guns in combat during World War II. I was given no pistol training. I would have no problem killing a shooter but would not be allowed to carry my combat weapons in class.
In spite of completing a combat pistol course after the war while employed as a police officer, I still would have been too rotten a shot to duel with a shooter in a classroom full of students.
I recommend that our school district avoid funding armed teachers.
