The Baraboo Thunderbirds girls basketball team took a giant step forward on Saturday in its quest for its first Badger North Conference title, defeating the host Waunakee Warriors in overtime, 74-73.

Baraboo (6-3, 3-0 Badger North) put four players in double figures scoring and stayed tied atop the conference with Sauk Prairie (4-4, 3-0) despite allowing nine Warriors (2-6, 1-1) 3-pointers.

Meghan Kreilkamp has a season-high 16 points and eight assists for BHS. Baraboo's Sam Terry contributed 14 points and 14 rebounds, Anna Schmelzer had a career-high 12 points, and Megan Digmann and Emily Brinker each added 10 points.

The Thunderbirds had as much as an 11 point lead during regulation, but the home team came back and the squads went into the extra sessions tied at 63-63.

In overtime, the T-Birds held the advantage on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and finishing 3-for-3 from the free throw line. For the game, Baraboo shot a bit better than Waunakee, finishing at a 48% (30-62) clip compared to 39% (24-61) for the home team.

The win caps a successful five-day stretch for the T-Birds, who went 2-1 this week and sets up a key matchup with Sauk Prairie on Tuesday in Baraboo.
