The magic number is 40 - and the Portage Warriors girls basketball team didn't reach it on Tuesday.

That means ice cream for the Baraboo Thunderbirds.

Sometime today the Thunderbirds will be enjoying their sweet treat for a job well done defensively - and perhaps even offensively - after dispatching the visiting Warriors, 72-36, in Badger North action.

"The under-40 (points) club is pretty exciting for the kids," said BHS coach Dave Crane, who'll be placing the ice cream order. "We played with great defensive intensity and played a good game overall."

BHS's Meghan Kreilkamp finished with a game-high 15 points, Emily Brinker poured in 12 and Emily O'Rourke added 10 as Baraboo stepped up the pressure on both ends of the floor in the second half, outscoring the Warriors, 33-10. Leading 39-26 at the break, BHS stretched its lead to 57-31 after three quarters.

"I thought we could transition well against them (Portage) because of the kids we have, and control the boards and get easy layups," Crane said, who got quality minutes from all 13 players on the roster. "It also helped that we shot well from the perimeter."

When not scoring on fast breaks or getting the ball into the post for high-percentage shots, Baraboo dished the ball outside, where it knocked down six 3-pointers. For the game, the home team shot 41% (31-75).

"We were hoping we could deny them the inside and slow down their transition game," said Portage (2-1, 1-1 Badger North) coach Brian Conner. "But we didn't communicate well and Baraboo just played like a well-oiled machine."

The T-Birds (2-0, 1-0) head to Milwaukee Washington on Saturday, the start of a three-game non-conference stretch that takes them to La Crosse Central on Dec. 14 and Monroe on Dec. 17.

"We've got a tough schedule coming up where we'll see three sides of the state," Crane said. By Christmas, I think we'll have a real sense of who we are as a team."
