SAUK CITY -Sam Terry scored a game-high 20 points - including three left-handed free throws after aggravating an injury to her shooting hand - and the Baraboo Thunderbirds girls basketball team secured at least a share of the Badger North Conference title following a 60-42 road win over the Sauk Prairie Eagles, Friday.
With two games remaining in conference play, Baraboo (9-1, 14-4 overall) holds a two-game lead over Waunakee (6-3) and Reedsburg (6-3), which is in action tonight at Mount Horeb and hosts the T-Birds Friday.
"We are Badger North champs at this point but we want to win it outright," said BHS coach Dave Crane. "I'm proud to coach a group of champions and our staff and these kids have a done a great job."
BHS used an 18-7 first quarter run to set the tone of the game.
Sam Terry went to the bench in the first half due to foul trouble, and with senior post Emily O'Rourke still nursing an injured knee, Baraboo looked to others to step up.
"Sam got into foul trouble early and had to sit and a lot of the kids stepped up," Crane said. "We got some big buckets off our bench and that gave us a lot of confidence."
Reserve guard Kelsey Digmann highlighted the effort with a season-high 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers in the first half which allowed the T-Birds to take a 27-16 lead into halftime.
With its sights set on a No. 1 seed and a lengthy run in the postseason, Crane acknowledged his team is starting to peak at the right time.
"We wanted to play good basketball in February, and I think the kids have a good feel for what we want to accomplish now, both offensively and defensively." he said.
