Markesan gets Wal-Mart grant

MARKESAN — Walmart Distributions Center 7039 presented a grant to Pam Waite and March Escamilla at a check presentation ceremony at Markesan Middle School, Markesan, on Oct. 2. Walmart is helping Markesan Middle School purchase much-needed classroom supplies through it new Teacher Rewards program. At a check presentation ceremony at 100 E. Vista Blvd., the school’s principal Pam Waite was presented with a grant from the Walmart Foundation.

Nationally, the Teacher Reward program will enable Walmart and Sam’s Club to provide more than $4 million to 40,000 deserving teachers across the United States.

“Walmart is committed to helping address unmet needs in the communities where we serve,” said Walmart coordinator Tracy Ezell.

“Markesan is just thrilled to receive this grant,” said Waite. “We are passionate about fulfilling our mission of opening doors for kids; and this grant will permit us to purchase equipment to be used in our science program so that we can meet our goals.”

The new Teacher Rewards program is an extension of the retailer’s ongoing support of education and local community involvement. In 2008, Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation gave more the $66 million to fund educational programs and scholarships in communities across the country.
