Local dental professionals had a rare opportunity to hear from a Harvard educated doctor about dental pathology.

Dr. Sook-Bin Woo specializes in oral pathology and oral medicine. She received her masters of science degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry and earned both her doctor of dental medicine and master of medical sciences degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Mary Grote offered the program to her practices referring dentists and staff in celebration of the 25th anniversary of her practice.

Grote said there were 65 participants at the day-long program.

“There is a mix of general dentists, specialists and dental hygienists,” Grote said.

Woo talked about two subject matters during her presentation: Diagnosis and management of red and white lesions and bisphosponates and osteonecrosis of the jaw.

“I talked about diseases of the mother other than those related to teeth such as skin diseases,” Woo said. “Also about new treatments for herpes and cancer sours.”

Bisphosponates are drugs that are commonly given to patients for osteoporosis and bone cancer.

“It strengthens bone but has nasty side effects that can cause part of the jaw bone to die. I updated the dentists on that.”

Woo speaks throughout the nation and makes some international appearances.

“I will be going to Italy in December to give the same two talks,” Woo said.
