Pamida store to close in Waupun

By HANK SNYDER, Staff Reporter

WAUPUN - Pamida Discount Center is closing.

Tuesday's surprise announcement — taped to the doors of the store — was a shock for many Waupun residents who just saw Van's Corner Drug close last week. The staff of 17 employees were told Monday.

Manager Brenda Henkel, who had plans on expanding the store's operation was not available for comment.

The store, located at 1134 W. Main St., has been a Waupun landmark for almost a quarter century and sold a sundry of items including electronic items, furniture, office supplies, garden supplies, beauty supplies, clothing and more.

Customer response was varied.

"I'm a little disappointed, it's too bad," said Angie Hodge.

"It's kind of a shock, we're going to miss it," said Marie Zills.

"I'm sorry about it closing," said Katherine Prange.

But one customer saw it coming.

"It's not a surprise. When they had sale flyers typically the items were not in stock. Lots of people just go out of town to Wal-Mart for a bigger selection," said Patty Miller.

The sign on the door said the store is closing Oct. 10 "due to economic diversity."
