A mayoral election in Columbus, a large slate for Beaver Dam School Board, and a request to exceed school spending caps in Horicon will be among the ballot issues for voters on Tuesday.
The local races join two statewide races that will be on the ballot.
State Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson is being challenged for her spot on the court by Jefferson County Judge Randy Koschnick.
The race for the superintendent of public instruction pits Tony Evers against Rose Fernandez. The current superintendent of schools, Elizabeth Burmaster, chose not to seek re-election.
All polls open at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.
Here is a glance at some of the area's contested races:
BEAVER DAM
One of two contested aldermanic seats in the 2009 Beaver Dam spring election involves 1st Ward incumbent Clancy Knaup and challenger Donna Fuhrman.
Kenneth Anderson is challenging incumbent Glen Link to represent residents of Ward 3.
Incumbent Marge Jorgensen will face five challengers for the three open spaces on the Beaver Dam Unified School District Board of Education on election day on April 7. They are Robert Castro, Daniel Feuling, Del Yaroch, Gary Spielman and Erin Broome.
Jorgensen has served one three-year term on the school board. Fellow incumbents Mark Kirst and Katherine Berkvam decided against running for re-election. Spielman is a former school board member.
COLUMBUS
The city of Columbus will have a new mayor this month with the seat going to either former mayor and council member Peter Kaland or former council and school board member Bob Link. Incumbent Mayor Nancy Osterhaus failed to advance out of the February primary.
Two seats are being contested on the Columbus council. In District 2, incumbent Darrell Augustine is being challenged by former council member and mayor Dave Bomkamp. In District 3, incumbent Bill Bruns faces Ray Lawler. District 1 Alderperson Roger Sneath is unopposed.
The Columbus School Board has four candidates running for three open positions. On the ballot will be incumbent Don Nelson and newcomers Bill Braun, Pam Larson and Sally Owen.
FALL RIVER
The Fall River School Board has three candidates for two open positions. Incumbents Dave Brozek and Doug Lee are joined by former school district employee Wendy Corlett in seeking the openings.
The race for the Fall River Village Board shows incumbent president Dale Standke being challenged by board member Ronald Kennedy.
Kennedy is also on the ballot to be re-elected to his board post and four people are seeking the three openings. Also on the ballot are Steve Obrion, Duane Durtschi and Gerald Schulze. Durtschi and Schulze are incumbents.
CAMBRIA
The seats of school board members John Heil and Daniel DeYoung are up for re-election. Heil represents the Township of Scott and DeYoung represents the district at large. Heil will run unopposed in April, and DeYoung will run against challenger Pete Schrandt.
Nick McConochie's name will appear on the ballot twice on Tuesday, once for re-election to his post as a village trustee, and again for a two-year term as village president. If McConochie wins both elections he must pick which office he will accept, and the village board will appoint someone to the other.
McConochie faces Glen Williams for president. Williams has one year remaining on his term as a village trustee. If Williams wins, the board will appoint someone to his trustee seat. Other nominees for trustee include incumbents Barb Link and Jim Pharo. Rounding out the field in the trustee race are Joelle DeBoer, Julie Hughes and Cody Doucette
RANDOLPH
Four names will appear on the ballot for three open seats on the Randolph village board . Incumbents Steve Oosterhouse, Dick Nieman and Todd Ehlenfeldt are up for re-election and will face challenger Don Wolff Jr. Village president Ken Ireland runs unopposed for another term.
The seats of school board members Laurie Boomsma and James Holwerda are up for re-election and they will run unchallenged. The term of office for school board member is three years beginning on Monday, April 27, 2009.
WAUPUN
In Waupun the 1st, 3rd, and 5th District seats are up for election. In the 1st District incumbent Chad Veleke isn't running, and Dale Schmidt is the only candidate. In 5th District incumbent Rohn Bishop Jr. isn't running and Mike Johnson is the only candidate.
In the 3rd District Matt Hickmann is running against incumbent Eric Aaron Navis.
For the Waupun Area School District, incumbents Scott Fairbank and write-in candidate Bill Bruins are vying for the at-large position and Percy Harper battles to hold his Fox Lake area position against incumbent Ronald Paul.
JUNEAU
Four candidates are vying for two seats on the Dodgeland Board of Education, and a third seat will be uncontested on election day.
Scot Niemeyer, an incumbent representative of the village of Reeseville and town of Shields, is being challenged by Shawna Rennhack; and Neil Whiting, an incumbent representative of the city of Juneau, is being challenged by Kimberly Rundberg-Montgomery.
Jeff Caine, the incumbent board president who represents the town of Clyman, will face no opposition.
In the city of Juneau John Schuster will challenge John Burgbacher to represent the residents of Ward 2
HORICON
When John Forster announced that, due to an impending move to Kansas, he is no longer a candidate for re-election as the Ward III alderman, he asked his supporters to ignore his name on the April 8 ballot and vote for write-in candidate Nathan Anfinson.
Anfinson, who challenged Forster in the 2007 spring election is now an officially announced write-in candidate.
John Flouro is unopposed in his bid for re-election in Ward II.
No one has expressed interest in the Ward I seat vacated by Douglas Psenicka.
Voters will also tally support or opposition for a referendum to exceed revenue limits for 2009-'10 to maintain instructional programs and meet operating expenses.
MAYVILLE
In Mayville Marge Nitschke is fighting incumbent E. Jay Gehring to keep her fifth ward City Council seat for the third term.
