FOX LAKE — Residents in Fox Lake are preparing to say farewell to their elementary school with an open house on Tuesday.
The elementary school is closing after this school year as part of the Waupun Area School District's $1 million budget cuts. Alto Elementary and Jefferson Elementary in Waupun also will also close their doors in June.
The school was built in Fox Lake in 1950.
The staff and Parent Teacher Organization of Fox Lake Elementary School are hosting the open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Former and current Fox Lake area residents, past and present students, teachers and staff are welcome to attend the open house.
The school banner will act as the guest book. Everyone attending will be able to sign the banner, which will be put in a time capsule at a later date. There will be drawings for door prizes.
There will be displays throughout the building, including two slide shows—one of current students and one of faces past. Classrooms will be open for viewing and hallway walls will have students' projects on display. There will be an art show with students' art pieces.
The library will become the historical room, with old photo albums, newspaper clippings, ledger books and other items of interest for the history buffs.
There will also be drinks and light snacks for those in attendance. If you have any Fox Lake School memorabilia that you would like displayed at the open house, or if you have any questions concerning the event, please contact the school at 928-3136 or Karen at 928-6045.
Next year, kindergarten through second graders will be in the current Washington Elementary, renamed Meadow Wood Primary School and third through sixth graders will be in the current middle school, renamed Rock River Intermediate School.
In Fox Lake a group of residents calling themselves Concerned Area Residents for Education are circulating a petition to detach from the WASD. The petition needs to be filed by July 1 to be considered for the 2010-11 school year. The petition will not prevent closure of the Fox Lake Elementary for the upcoming school year.
