Husty blood drive to aid 7-year-old

HUSTISFORD — Teen donors from Hustisford High School are combining forces with the Hustisford Fire Department and EMS Department to sponsor a blood drive with BloodCenter of Wisconsin at Firemen's Hall on Tweedy Street on June 23 from 2 to 7 p.m.

Hustisford High School senior Samantha Kuehl is coordinator of the blood drive. Food and beverages will be provided by the firemen.

The drive honors Ben Schiller, a 7-year-old Hustisford grade school student. Schiller was born with a congenital birth defect that resulted in two heart surgeries. He also suffered from a torn artery that almost cost him his life when he was less than 3 years old. In the process of the artery repair, 21 units of red cells and two units of plasma were required to save him. He will need more surgery and blood in the future. His family leads by example in blood donation. His mother Deb is an active donor who encourages everyone to consider the needs of people in their families or who may live next door, around the corner or down the road.

The Hustisford blood drive will collect whole blood and have automation equipment for donors to do platelet and dual red cell donations. Appointments can be made by calling (877)232-4376 or going to www.bcw.edu/hustisfordcomm.
