Census estimates released

By Citizen Staff

The city of Beaver Dam gained 191 residents over the past year according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau Wednesday.

The city had experienced an estimated drop of 375 residents from its official 2000 population of 15,317 and its estimated 2007 population of 14,942. The 2008 estimate stands at 15,133.

Only two local cities have made gains since 2000. Mayville, which sat at 4,927 in 2000, is estimated to have 5,090 residents now, a two-resident increase from last year.

Columbus, meanwhile, lost a resident from its 2007 estimate of 5,094, but still has a greater population than it did in 2000 (4,492).

Waupun has dropped from 10,736 in 2000 to an estimated 10,469 in 2008, including a seven-person decline from 2007. Horicon (3,495) has lost an estimated 279 residents since 2000 while Fox Lake's drop was smaller, showing just a nine-person difference from 2000 with its 2008 estimate of 1,462.
