Waupun puts price on school buildings

WAUPUN — Three Waupun area schools that were full of students last fall are now vacant and one, Alto Elementary, is already on the market for $200,000.

Monday night the school board voted unanimously to put Jefferson Elementary and Fox Lake Elementary on the market also; Fox Lake for $311,000, and Jefferson Elementary including four of its 15 acres for $426,000.

“It took longer to appraise Jefferson Elementary because it had lots of property leased to the city,” said board member Roger Schregardus. “And in Fox Lake we had to wait until the Fox Lake referendum was voted on before we could do anything with the school.”

District Administrator Randy Refsland said, “Jefferson School was appraised at $426,000 which doesn’t include all the property. The city of Waupun has a lease that goes until 2086 on 11 of the school’s 15 acres.”

The city leased the property and uses it for athletic events such as baseball and soccer.

The next step is to find a real  estate broker, or brokers, to market the properties.

On another matter, the board said “yes” to an out of country travel request, namely to Japan.

The trip was set for last May, however the outbreak of H1N1 flu in the U.S. caused the Japanese, who had no H1N1 to pull the welcome mat.

However, since H1N1 has now reached the shores of Japan, the welcome mat has been rolled out again, and many of the students who planned on going last May will have the opportunity to visit their sister school in May 2010.

“The issue of refunds for cancelled tickets was resolved with the airlines,” said Refsland. “Those who wanted were issued refunds; others got travel vouchers from the airline.”

Approval of the trip was unanimous.
