HORICON – The $6.5 million reconstruction of Highway 33 in the city of Horicon is finally complete.
The road will open today following a ribbon cutting, and eight months of detours around the city of Horicon will come to an end.
“I think everybody will be glad it’s finally completed,” said Horicon Mayor Jim Grigg.
The project was completed in three phases with the first phase, the portion that included downtown Horicon from Vine Street to Palmatory Street completed and opened in August. That portion of the reconstruction included a substantial remake of the downtown including ornamental street lighting, decorative sidewalks, crosswalks and terraces.
The second phase was from the bridge over the Rock River to Columbia Street and the third phase was Larabee Street.
Karla Knorr of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said final figures are not available, but the project will be on budget or very close.
In addition to street reconstruction, the project included water and sewer utility work.
“The challenge with this job was the amount of construction that had to be done in one season,” she said.
There may be a handful of minor details to resolve with landscaping and other items as the project punch list is completed, according to Knorr.
