Humane society has barn cats

JUNEAU – The Dodge County Humane Society has several barn cats to choose from for those who need a cat to keep mice or other critters at bay.

DCHS animal care manager Jessica Soboleski said it is not the preferable time to adopt barn cats out, but it is necessary this year with an influx of the cats.

“A majority of these cats came from a farm situation where the family was moving and they needed to get rid of them,” Soboleski said.

The cats are not feral.

“They are all friendly, personable, nice kitties who like to hang outside,” Soboleski said. “They are all very friendly.”

The basic difference between the barn cats and house cats is the desire to use litter boxes.

“It’s a lifestyle they like for various reasons but the difference is they wouldn’t do well in a house,” Soboleski said. “They don’t like using litter boxes.”

“We are looking for them to have homes where there are barns with hay so they can stay warm and where they will feed them cat food,” Soboleski said.

There are about a dozen cats that have had the background of being farm cats at the humane society, Soboleski said.

The cats are $50 each and have been spayed or neutered, received rabies vaccinations, been dewormed and deflead. Those who adopt more than one barn cat will also be able to get an additional discount. There is also an additional $10 discount for each animal adopted out of the humane society currently.
