Juneau tax rate up slightly

JUNEAU – Taxpayers in Juneau will see a small increase from the city on their tax bills.

Juneau city clerk and treasurer Dennis Sheldon said the city’s revenue was $9.1 million and of that amount $1.1 million would be levied from taxpayers.

“It’s a $10 increase for the owner of a $100,000 home,” Sheldon said.

The Juneau Common Council adopted the city’s 2010 budget and set the city’s tax levy on Monday night following a public hearing that was not attended by any member of the public.

Mayor Ron Bosak said it was a very difficult budget for the city.

“We pretty well cut everything including pencils, pens and paper clips,” Bosak said.

The city’s mill rate increased from $7.56 per $1.000 of assessed property value to $7.66 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For the owner of a $100,000 home, the city part of their taxes went up from $756 to $766,” Sheldon said.

“The city taxes are only 22 percent of the taxes paid by tax payers in Juneau. Dodgeland School District collects 42 percent of the tax bill. Other entities receiving funds from the tax bills are: TIF districts, Dodge County, Moraine Park Technical College and the state of Wisconsin.

A major project in the budget is resurfacing East Oak Grove Street. Sheldon said a majority of that project will be paid through a stimulus grant but there is some money that the city has to put towards the project.
