WAUPUN — The Waupun Area School District welcomed two principals to start the new school year.
Wendy Sallam is the new principal of Meadow View Primary School and Melinda Myers is the new principal of Rock River Intermediate School. The school board approved Sallam’s contract earlier this summer and approved Myers’ contract Aug. 21.
Rob Meyer, the previous Meadow View Primary principal, made an internal move to become the district’s director of teaching and learning. He has several years of experience within the Waupun Area School District prior to this move; first as the Junior/Senior High School assistant principal, then as the primary school principal. He previously taught social studies in the Sun Prairie Area School District.
“I am excited for the opportunity to serve the district’s communities in this role,” Meyer said. “We have assembled a strong team, united behind a common vision, to continue our successes and continue to move forward.”
Sallam comes to Waupun with 16 years of experience, most recently working in the Oconomowoc Area School District.
“Waupun is doing the right work for students, and I am honored to be a part of the district,” Sallam said. “We are committed to ensuring each student receives a challenging academic experience, learns to grow socially, and is supported emotionally. At Meadow View Primary, we desire to be your partner in education to build a strong foundation for academic and social growth for all students.
“Just like building a strong foundation is critical to supporting a house, a strong school foundation is essential for future learning. My background experience helps me to focus on meeting the needs of all learners so they can maximize their potential.”
Sallam has worked as a first-grade teacher in the Elkhorn Area School District, and as a response to intervention and gifted and talented coordinator in the Oconomowoc Area School District.
Myers, the new principal at Rock River Intermediate, also has many years of experience. Myers’ previous 15 years in education includes serving as a second-grade, third-grade and at-risk teacher in the Oakfield School District for six years; and second-, third- and fifth-grade teacher in the Beaver Dam Unified School District for seven years. Most recently, she was the principal at Eden Elementary School for three years, where she helped lead curriculum and instruction and professional development efforts of the Campbellsport School District. Under her tenure, Eden Elementary was recognized as a DPI Title I School of Recognition.
“I am excited to join the Waupun Area School District,” Myers said. “As I have talked with staff, teachers, community members, and administrators I have heard so much about the commitment to student success and to providing a climate of respect, responsibility, and a safe environment for student learning. It is clear to me that this community takes the job of providing the best education for each child very seriously and that it drives the focus of the work here. I am eager to begin working with the staff and community to continue the great work that has already started at Rock River Intermediate.
“Literacy is the foundation for all other subject areas. It is a stepping stone for everything else. I believe my strong background in teaching and leading comprehensive literacy will be an asset to the Waupun community and will help to move our students forward.”
