COLUMBUS — A 55-year-old man was killed after a head-on collision at 2:36 a.m. Saturday on Highway 16 near Rhodes Bake N Serve between Columbus and Fall River.

According to a press release from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the 55-year-old man was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu west on Highway 16 in the eastbound lane and collided with an eastbound 2008 Buick Lucerne being driven by a 26-year-old man.

The driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving measures were attempted. The driver of the Lucerne was transported to a hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. Names of the drivers are being withheld pending notification of family.

According to the sheriff’s office, alcohol and failure to wear a seat belt are believed to be factors in the crash.

Highway 16 was closed for the investigation for approximately 3½ hours.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Columbia County Medical Examiner’s Office, Columbus Police Department, Fall River Police Department, UW MedFlight, Lifestar EMS, Rio EMS, Columbia County Highway Department and Blystone’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
