Grant A. Lien, 92, Columbus, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at Columbus Community Hospital.
He was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Columbus, to Grant and Amelia (Brandt) Lien. After graduating from Columbus High School, he was drafted and joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After the war, Grant was married to Joanne Sperley Aug. 18, 1956, in Columbus. Grant worked for Columbus Foods before he joined his brother in operating their father’s auto repair shop, Lien’s Garage in Columbus, after his unexpected death in 1948. Grant enjoyed the friendships made during those years in visiting and storytelling and would help anyone in need. He loved animals and building things out of wood, especially for his family. He also loved the hours spent gardening and caring for his lawn.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Lien of Columbus; two sons, John (Laura) and Joe (Karen) both of Columbus; two grandchildren, Rachel Lien (Shankar Lakshmanan) and Ben Lien; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1994; son, James; grandson, Dylan Lien Pittman; brother, Milton; and sister, Geraldine Hoff.
A funeral service was be held at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 20, at Jensen Funeral Home in Columbus. The Rev. Robert Wilke will officiate. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus, with full military honors.
