COLUMBUS - Mabel Helgerson Kvale, 95, of Columbus, died on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Columbus Community Hospital.
Mabel was born on Aug. 25, 1912, in the town of Hampden, Columbia County, to Herman and Wilhelmina (Schultz) Stange. She was a lifelong area resident. She was a nurses aid, which she dearly loved, working at Beaver Dam and Columbus hospitals, retiring in 1982. She married Clarence Helgerson and he preceded her in death in 1967. She married Ted Kvale in 1988 and he preceded her in death in 1988. she was a very faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church, Columbus, serving her church in many ways through the years.
A very special time in her life when at age 12 in 1924, she won the Columbia County Spelling Bee, and was so happy to win a trip to the Wisconsin State Fair, and be able to take her mother.
Survivors included two sons, Dale (Diane) Helgerson, Watertown, and Kenneth (Marcia) Cross Plains; one daughter, Betty (Jerry) Swann, Belleville, Colo.; two step-daughters, JoAnn (Don) Johnson, DeForest, and Marilyn Smith, Whitewater; two stepsons, Donald (Esther) Kvale, Madison, and Richard Kvale, Milwaukee; one daughter-in-law, Mary Helgerson, Sun Prairie; several beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Clarence Helgerson and Ted Kvale; one son, Vernon Helgerson on July 11, 2008; one sister, Addie Vick; one step-daughter-in-law, Ruby Kvale; one step-son-in-law, William Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at noon, at Faith Lutheran Church, 120 Faith Drive, Columbus. The Rev. Robert Moberg will officiate. Friends may call on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Burial will follow in Spring Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, Keyeser.
