MAILBAG - Political follies; Cambria pool

Politicians should take heed

Pages 4 and 5 of Tuesday’s Daily Citizen had two articles that were ironically related.

The first was titled, "Steps to cutting back spending." The article was full of ways to personally save money in a rough economy. One of the tips was to "analyze expenditures regularly" and make sure you are "spending within your income." These are good tips to follow.

The next page had an article titled,"Taxes claim 12 percent in state." The article stated we are 12th highest as a percentage of personal income taxes. It also went on to say it expects to go even higher, due to recent tax increases.

After reading both articles, I thought two things. First, maybe our taxes are so high because our politicians spend too much. I also thought the series of upcoming articles (about how to cut back on spending) could be sent directly to the people making our taxes so high.

Wednesday’s article talked about being honest about the situation you are in and include everybody in the conversation. Most of today’s politicians are not honest or inclusive about the situation we're in. I would much rather have the honest truth about our financial future, and take care of it now, than pushing all the debt onto our children and act as if everything was OK.

On an unrelated topic, the environmental lobby is having a bad year. Instead of a hole in our ozone, the hole is really in the manmade global warming theory.

Claims of more tornadoes and more and more severe hurricanes hasn't happened. With the temperatures we've had this past year, it's hard to argue for global warming. The worst part is, they use these claims to hype the policies of higher taxes.

Let's use some common sense in our political thinking instead of blindly following these people in Washington.
