Farmer’s markets a true treat Last week I couldn't help feeling sad that it was the end of the season for the local farmer's markets. All through the season I have been enjoying the freshness of local produce and getting to visit with the people who grow all these wonderful foods right here in our area. The markets have become a favorite shopping and social part of each week for me. I feel so good when I cook and eat fresh, local foods. I have also found a source for humanely raised, local meats — Shoe and Sal's farm fresh meats. In this confusing world where we often have to take things as they come, it is satisfying to know where more of my food is coming from and at the same time helping these friendly people make a living doing what they love to do. I enjoy having some control and confidence even if I sometimes pay a little more. So, I want to say thanks to all the people who bring these good things to the farmer’s markets and who still raise crops and animals in ways that are humane and sustainable. What they do is a real service to the community and I am a big fan. I have apples, and carrots, and jalepenos, and butternut squash stashed to get me through for a little while but after they are gone, I will be counting the months until next season. — Debbie Bissonnette Horicon Walker the right choice for governor I recently attended the Rally to Victory for Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker on Nov. 2, one year to Election Day 2010, which raised a staggering $25,581 in one day, a testament to the strong support Walker is receiving across Wisconsin. As a business person, Wisconsin’s antagonistic business environment is the most pressing issue facing us today. Wisconsin is currently a less than friendly place within which to do business. High taxes and burdensome laws and regulations prevent businesses from growing in this state. Rather than alienating businesses, the state should encourage companies to locate here and bring jobs with them. Walker understands this problem and he spoke about his dedication to business and job creation at the rally. Walker has earned tremendous support since his announcement of candidacy in April. Walker raised an impressive $1.1 million in the last fundraising period, of which 75 percent were for $50 or less, and half of all contributions came from new donors. Furthermore, more than 80 percent of elected Republicans in the state Legislature endorse Walker and he received more than 93 percent of the straw poll vote at the 2009 Republican Party of Wisconsin State Convention. Walker spoke enthusiastically about making Wisconsin a state we can all believe in again. I am confident that Scott Walker will bring responsibility back to government in Madison, and he has my full support for governor in 2010. — Charlie Wright Jr. Fall River
