Four area basketball teams survived the weekend. All four of them had to shed some voodoo to continue playing this week.

Perhaps no area team faced an uglier flashback scenario than the Columbus girls basketball team. The Cardinals faced McFarland at Watertown, a gym where they’ve been eliminated three of the past five seasons, including the last two.
And the first half followed the script of the last six Columbus regional faceplants. McFarland goes nuts beyond the arc, Heidi Paul picks up two fouls and the Cards pick a bad time to play some of their worst basketball.
Cards coach Jeff Schweitzer must have felt like Matt Damon in the movie Rounders when he faces the John Malkovich character of ‘Teddy KGB’, or as Damon put it, “like (Bill) Buckner going back to Shea.” But just as Damon found redemption, so did Columbus.
