Sectional cross country: Mayville girls make state

By Citizen Staff

MAYVILLE — Paced by a runner-up effort from Carissa Schneiter (16 minutes, 30 seconds), Mayville’s girls cross country team qualified for the Division 2 state meet in Saturday’s home sectional meet.

It’s the second time in the past three seasons Mayville has made state as a team.

“Anytime you get to state is a great achievement,” Mayville coach Bob Berry said. “They’ve consistently run well this year.”

The Cardinals finished second as a team with 75 points, joining Kiel (64) as team qualifiers.

“We lost to Kiel by 33 at the Mike Hurlbert invite earlier this season,” Berry said. “We had a chance late in the race to beat them.”

Rounding out the team score were Ericka Schaefer in eighth (17:06), Kelsey Krueger (11th, 17:26), Desiree Danner (22nd, 18:04) and Carrie Schuessler (32nd, 18:28).

“They set their goal at the beginning of the season and they did it,” Berry said. “What else can you ask for?”

Waupun freshman Andrew Klapper also advanced as an individual in the boys competition, taking sixth (17:55). It’s the first male runner to make state for the Warriors since 1988 according to Waupun coach Matt Dickhut.

“Andy had a great race,” Dickhut said. “He has worked hard this year.”

RACINE — Dodgeland’s Lydia Dornfeld advanced to the Division 3 state cross country meet Saturday, finishing fourth at the Prairie School sectional.

Dornfeld completed her run in 16 minutes, 57 seconds.

“We knew there were only five spots for sure and she went out in fifth,” Dodgeland coach Barry Smanz said. “She broke away from the pack at the mile and got to fourth in the final 800 meters.”

This is Dornfeld’s second trip to state. The junior made it as a freshman but missed due to injury last year.

Dornfeld had missed the last three weeks due to a hip injury but was cleared to run prior to sectionals.

“She was very excited,” Smanz said. “She’s worked hard all year.”
