Track and field: Champ breaks Flyway record

By Citizen Staff

ROSENDALE — Sophomore Trista Champ set the Flyway record in the 200 meter dash at Monday's conference track and field meet in Laconia.

The Cardinals finished second with 155.5 points. Kettle Moraine Lutheran took first with 174.5.

"I don't know what you have to do to win conference," Mayville coach Brent Ellington said. "We did everything we could do but we couldn't overcome KML's depth.

"We had a fantastic night. A lot of these times bode well for regionals, sectionals and state."

Champ clocked in at 26.25 seconds. She also cleared five feet to win the high jump.

"She got a slow start with injuries and she's just now starting to get into shape and coming around," Ellington said. "This might be better for her. We've got to get her long jump straightened out and we saw signs of that tonight."

Champ joined with Lauren VanKrey, Angelica Balderas and Jasmin Bednar to take the 1,600 relay in 4:12.8. VanKrey swept the hurdles, taking the 100 in 16.8 and the 300 in 49.1.

Balderas won the 400 in 1:00.12. Mayville won the 3,200 relay with Ericka Schaefer, Kelsey Krueger, Ashley Koch and Carissa Schneiter finishing in 10:23.02.

Schneiter took three seconds including the 1,600 (5:35.7), the 800 (2:31.6) and the pole vault (7-0). Balderas added a second in the 100 (13.2).

David Riegleman won three events as Mayville's boys took third. The Cardinals finished with 115 team points. Kettle Moraine Lutheran won the event with 142 points.

"I figured we would score between 100 and 110 points and we scored 115," Mayville coach Bob Berry said. "We had seven personal bests. I don't know what else we can do."

Riegleman swept the hurdles, taking the 110 in 15.4 seconds and the 300 in 40.5. He ran with Mike Leigl, Zach Retzlaff and Scott Moyle to win the 1,600 relay in 1:34.9.

Leigl won the long jump by clearing 12-3. Jeremy Schraufnagel won the pole vault (12-3) and took second in the high jump (6-2).

Mayville was second in the 800 relay. Leigl, Nick Hasch, Moyle and Nick Geiger finished in 1:34.9.

Mayville heads to Lomira for next Monday's Division 2 regional.
