EWC softball: Waupun takes outright title

By Citizen Staff

WAUPUN — If Waupun reached its goal of the Eastern Wisconsin softball title Tuesday, the Warriors can credit Plymouth with an assist.

Waupun easily took care of the visiting Raiders with wins of 10-0 and 11-1. The Panthers knocked off Campbellsport, 11-8, to make the Warriors' third title in four years outright.

"It's nice to win it outright," Waupun coach Tom Hagstrom said. "We're just glad to get a piece of it.

"The big game's still next week."

Ariel Griffis recovered from a one-inning stint Monday to start a three-hit shutout in game one. She worked four innings and allowed one hit and one walk.

Demi Kastein left the yard twice in game one, following a two-run launch in the third inning with a solo shot in the fourth. Nicole Sturtz and Brittany Flegner each had two hits in game one.

In game two, Kastein struck out eight without an earned run over five innings of two-hit ball. Flegner juiced the offense by going 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs.

"Demi and Brittany had two great games offensively," Hagstrom said. "Both of our pitchers were pretty effective and everybody contributed with the bats."

Sturtz had two hits and two RBIs. She reached base nine times and her only out was a sacrifice fly.

Waupun (16-3, 13-1 EWC) hosts Division 3 power Oakfield Thursday.

Kiel fell to 2-15 and 1-13.
