Conference track roundup: Depth charged Cards 3-peat

By Citizen Staff

LODI — Depth proved to be a valuable asset for the Columbus boys track team Tuesday night.

Twenty-eight individuals scored points for the Cardinals as they edged out Lakeside Lutheran, 139-136.5, for their third consecutive Northern Capitol Conference title.

"We're real pleased," Columbus coach Bob Ayer said. "We didn't want to give up our title and the boys responded."

Things got off to a rocky start as Andy Peterson went down in the 100 preliminaries and could not run the rest of the day.

But Ryan Freidel, Brad Sennhenn and Noah Perkins picked him up. Freidel won the 3,200 meter run in 10 minutes, 43.73 seconds, then took second in the 1,600 (4:42.76).

Sennhenn had three runner-up finishes in the 100 (11.06), the 200 (22.58) and the 400 (52.69).

Perkins had Columbus' other individual second in the discus, throwing 121 feet, 6 inches.

Columbus' 800 relay team of Fran Christian, Zach Mallon, Beau Berry and Jordan Pauls took second (1:37.11).

On the girls side, led by Kayla Waddell and Jeanne Price's two first-place efforts, Columbus took third (127.5)

Waddell won the high jump (5-2) with Price capturing the triple jump crown (33-8.75).

Waddell and Price then combined with Beth Miller and Bridget Hussey to take the 800 (1:52.36).

Abby Lueck had a strong all-around night, taking second in the discus (87-8), shot put (37-8.75) and the 300 hurdles (50.66).

Columbus goes to a Division 2 regional at Whitewater Monday.

Boys scores: Columbus 139, Lakeside Lutheran 136.5, Lake Mills 124, Lodi 61, Poynette 55.5, Luther Prep 38.

Girls scores: Lakeside Lutheran 189, Lake Mills 129, Columbus 127.5, Lodi 75.5, Poynette 21, Luther Prep 4.

Eastern Wisconsin

PLYMOUTH — Waupun's Wade Williams earned a first and two seconds at Tuesday's Eastern Wisconsin Conference track meet.

Williams won the 100 meter dash in 11.9 seconds and took second in the 200 (22.98).

Williams then worked as the anchor leg of the 400 relay that included Max Sheahan, Austin Armga and Dennis Rens.

Taking the baton in fourth place, Williams blew past two runners and nearly caught Kiel's Andrew Brocker at the line. Needing a video replay to determine a winner, officials ruled that Kiel (45.77) bested Waupun (45.78) at the line.

"They had to split the screen," Waupun coach Matt Dickhut said. "Wade had his head down and (Brocker) had his shoulder turned. That was the difference."

Samie Haas earned a title in the long jump, going 15 feet, 7.75 feet. In the high jump, Brandi Dolgner was third (4-10) while Haas was fourth (4-8).

The duo were also part of the Warriors' third-place 400 relay team (54.88) along with Rachel Dickhut and Stephanie Taylor.

Waupun heads to Monday's Division 2 regional meet at Lomira.

Boys scores: Plymouth 154.5, Kiel 140, Two Rivers 138, New Holstein 78, Sheboygan Falls 73.5, Kewaskum 69, Waupun 41, Campbellsport 8.
