MONONA — Eric Sackett woke Beaver Dam up just in time Friday against Monona Grove.
The senior hit a go-ahead bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning as the Golden Beavers rallied for a 6-2 nonconference baseball win.
"We were sleep-walking until the sixth," BD coach Joe Loizzo said. "We were lackadaisical and undisciplined at the plate — something we haven't been in recent games."
BD won for the 10th time in 12 games but needed some timely hitting to get the job done.
Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth, Mitch Minnig led off by reaching on an error. After a walk, Ezra Mitchell sacrificed the runners into scoring position.
Ben Schmid reached on an error to load the bases for Sackett, who smashed a triple to right field, giving the Beavers (12-6) a 3-2 lead. Nick Bannach came up as a pinch-hitter and belted a single to score Sackett.
Three batters later, Dusty Blanchard singled home Bannach for a 5-2 advantage.
BD tacked on one more run in the sixth as Schmid roped an RBI double.
"Sackett and Schmid really helped us out when we needed them," Loizzo said. "Our seniors did a strong job for us."
Nick Rechek picked up the win, scattering three hits in a complete-game effort. Though he walked four and struck out one, he did enough to throw off the Silver Eagles.
"Nick wasn't as sharp as he has been but he stayed within himself and pitched well," Loizzo said.
The defense was also solid behind Rechek, committing just one error. Mitchell had two plays to thwart a potential rally by MG. After a leadoff walk, Mitchell threw out Tyson Dolfen trying to steal second.
Then a slow roller was picked up by Mitchell, who fired it to first to gun down another runner.
BD hosts Kenosha St. Joseph's Tuesday.
