Nonconference football: Dells stops Mayville

By Citizen Staff

MAYVILLE — Wisconsin Dells scored early in the fourth quarter then held off two deep drives by Mayville as the Chiefs downed the Cardinals, 21-17, in Friday's nonconference contest.

"We had our chances but made some mistakes," Mayville coach Tom Noennig said. "We got down inside the 15-yard line but stalled and missed a field goal with seven minutes left."

Mayville took the lead on a pair of touchdown passes from Mike Gionet to Scott Moyle in the third quarter. Gionet finished with 141 yards in the air on 11-of-25 passing.

The Dells (3-0) took the lead for good 25 seconds into the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run from Zach Batchelor.

Despite the loss, Mayville (2-1, 1-0 Flyway) receives a conference victory due to the forfeit from Lomira.

Noennig was happy his team could get a quality game instead of receiving a bye week.

"This was a great football game for our coaches and players to be involved with," Noennig said. "We got to learn a little more about ourselves.

"If we got the bye, we wouldn't have learned anything."

Mayville faces Laconia next Friday.
