Large Trailways roundup: Big plays sink Dodgeland

By Citizen Staff

JUNEAU — Trey Shaw carried 11 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns as Deerfield took Friday's 20-10 Large Trailways football win at Dodgeland.

"It was three big plays," Dodgeland coach Ron Miller said. "I thought we played a nice game and really played hard.

"We left it all out there. We moved the ball well. It's a tough one to take."

Shaw bolted for a 71-yard scoring run early in the second quarter. Brent Saugstad cut the lead in half with his 30-yard field goal midway through the frame.

Michael Hommen picked off a pass and returned it 46 yards for a score early in the third quarter.  Wes Jahnke responded 22 seconds later with a 1-yard TD run to cut the gap to three.

Shaw put the game away with a 50-yard run with 2:50 remaining. Dodgeland put up 351 yards of offense but turned it over twice.

Steve Schmidt finished with 126 yards on 25 carries. The Trojans (3-2, 2-1 Large) visit Oakfield next week.

Deerfield raised its record to 4-1 and 3-0.

MARKESAN — Pat Banks carried 20 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns in Pardeeville's 55-7 Large Trailways football win at Markesan Friday night.

"We got dominated," Markesan coach Kevin Wopat said. "We had a challenge in front of us and we backed down, which was due to our inability to stop the run. A lot of that is poor tackling."

Markesan gave up 350 yards on the ground and rushed for only four. Wopat was pleased with quarterback Alex Dallman, who hit Brice TerBeest from 15 yards out for the Hornets' only score.

"Alex played well," Wopat said. "We dropped a lot of balls."

Markesan (0-5, 0-3 Large) visits Johnson Creek next week.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 and 3-0.
