Boys soccer: Hawks blank Beavers

APPLETON — Beaver Dam's boys soccer team hung with Appleton Xavier for the first 35 minutes Thursday but could not get a shot past goalkeeper Chris Kuehl as the Golden Beavers fell, 2-0, Thursday.

"I was proud of how the guys played and kept it close," BD coach Kevin Wallace said. "Xavier's no slouches — they're a very good team and we hung with them."

Xavier, a Division 2 honorable mention by the WSCA, took the lead in the 38th minute when a cross from the backline hit a BD player and bounced past goalkeeper Jon Wise for an own goal.

The Hawks (13-5-0) got their second tally at the 56th minute when Sam Slagle hit a perfect corner kick to Matt Stearns, who headed it into the net.

Wise did have 12 saves for the Golden Beavers (3-12-2), who host Wisconsin Lutheran on Senior Night.
