WAUPUN — Beaver Dam capped an impressive weekend by beating the hosts, 10-3, of this weekend's Waupun Tournament on Sunday to give coach Joe Loizzo his 500th American Legion win.
"It's been a great thing for our program with the parents and kids I've gotten to know," said Loizzo, who has a record of 500-142 in 17 years of Legion coaching with four state titles. "We play with a lot of pride.
"For us to play well and beat a senior-dominated team like Waupun lifts our spirits. We have a lot of respect for them."
Matt Haase kept Waupun in check and picked up the win. He allowed no earned runs, two hits, three walks and struck out eight.
"Haase did a nice job for us," Loizzo said. "He got a lot of first pitch strikes and showed a lot of composure.
"He was dominant. We swung the bats pretty well."
Rollie Keel's RBI single was followed by a two-run double from Mitch Aplin. Those two hits broke the game open as part of an eight-run fourth inning for Post 146.
"We got a lot of contributions from a lot of kids," Loizzo said. "We have a pretty good nucleus of kids."
Aplin finished 2-for-4 with a double and Haase went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Alex Finke had two hits with a double.
Earlier in the day, Finke hit a three-run walk-off homer to end BD's 15-3 drubbing of Prepside. On Saturday, BD needed five runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun Hartford, 8-7.
BD (4-0) visits Jackson Tuesday.
Waupun (3-1) is off until BD returns to Schlieve Field Friday night.
