HUSTISFORD – First it was a couple of cracks, then the dam completely ruptured on host Hustisford Tuesday night.
The Falcons held a 12-4 lead on Markesan before two plays in less than a minute completely turned the game around. That set the stage for a 24-2 run and the Hornets never relinquished the lead in a 62-48 boys hoops win at the Hustisford Tournament.
“We come here and sit all day and I thought we were lethargic and it showed,” Markesan coach Josh Gibbons said. “I loved the way our guys battled back. We were able to grind out a win.”
After turning the ball over midway through the first half, Brett Hildebrandt was hit with a technical foul, leading to two Alex Dallman free throws.
Grant Nass, who was giving Markesan fits inside, picked up his second foul 41 seconds later and Hustisford collapsed.
“You hate to see your big man go out when he’s playing as well as he was,” Falcons coach Kirk Kaul said.
Markesan ratcheted up its defensive pressure and forced 17 of the hosts’ 25 turnovers before halftime. The Hornets, who had 12 turnovers before halftime themselves, hit 11 of 24 shots overall and four of nine from long range.
Hustisford would open the second half on an 11-2 spurt to close within three. But Nass got in foul trouble again and Markesan responded with a seven-point burst to return the edge to double digits.
Markesan hit only half of its 18 free-throw attempts in the second half but was opportunistic enough to stay in front. Dallman led all scorers with 16 points while adding three steals.
“Hustisford battled hard but we had one guy who could make a play,” Gibbons said. “When we share the ball, we do good things.”
Matt Silva scored 12 points, swiped six steals and added four rebounds.
Joe Quade threw in 13 points and Cody Laper added 10.
Nass had 12 points and seven rebounds. Adam Falkenthal scored 11 points while Michael Hopfinger added 10 points and six rebounds for the Falcons (1-5), who host Princeton Tuesday.
Markesan (5-3) visits Dodgeland the same night.
Barneveld 63
Horicon 24
Barneveld exploited Horicon’s thin bench on its way to a 63-24 rout. Andy Mueller had eight points and four rebounds while Jake Zimmermann had seven points and 13 rebounds.
Horicon (1-7) visits Springs Tuesday night.
Barneveld is now 6-1.
