Ball four.

Those two words got said by the home plate umpire 11 times Monday night while the Beaver Dam American Legion Post 146 varsity baseball team was batting, combining with seven hits and an error to give BD 18 base runners and more than enough firepower for a 10-0 win over Stoughton Post 59 in an East Central American Legion Conference game.

“We stress making sure that we get a pitch that we want to hit early in the count. And if we don’t get that, then we’ve just got to battle with two strikes,” BD head coach Dylan Ziegler said of what it was that led to so many good at bats. “Luckily for us today, we were patient (and) we made them pitch to us.”

No kidding. And BD’s offense got to work right away, too.

A pair of first inning walks allowed Mitch Graff to drive in a pair with a two-out single that made it 2-0.

That lead stood up until the fourth, when Adrian Calderon’s one-out single to left drove in Charlie Storhoff to put BD ahead 3-0.

And then in the fifth, three RBI walks made it 6-0, Zach Beekman’s two-out RBI single made it 7-0, two runs scored on an error to make it 9-0, and Payton Gorr sent the crowd home earlier with an RBI single back up the middle to administer the mercy rule.

Speaking of Gorr, the tall righty was about as dominant as possible, going all five innings while striking out five, walking none, and yielding just a one-out single in the second.

“He was aggressive, getting ahead early on batters. And then he was able to mix what he wanted to and he just did a nice job of locating – making it hard for any hitter to put a good swing on a pitch,” Ziegler said of how Gorr was so effective. “He hit the corners, he moved it up and down – he just was really good today.”

The whole team was, in fact.

So other than the pitching and the 10 runs, what stood out the most to Ziegler?

“I thought out base running was pretty good,” he said. “Any little mistake that they made, we got an extra base for it. And that’s sometimes overlooked because it doesn’t go in the stat book, but it puts us in positions to knock them in in the next at bat. And we did a good job of doing that.”

With the win, BD is now 7-2 on the summer with a road game at Fort Atkinson today looming next on the schedule.

Post 146 is off to a good start.

“Yeah, it’s not bad,” Ziegler said. “We played really good competition up in Point (at the Firecracker Classic last weekend), and our league has good competition too.

“So we’re really going to test ourselves and see what we can do this summer.”
