Dylan Ziegler lost count of exactly how many lineup and position changes he made, but the head coach of the Beaver Dam American Legion Post 146 varsity baseball team knew this much:

“It was a lot,” he said.

Yes it was.

But it worked.

Everyone on the lineup card contributed in one way or another Friday night and Post 146 was able to scratch across two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-2 win over Fort Atkinson Post 166.

The reason for all the substituting and lineup maneuvering was experimental, Ziegler said.

“We want to find roles that these guys can fill for regionals,” he said. “So I wanted to give some guys some opportunities, because they deserve it — they’ve been working hard all summer. And we want to see what they can do in case we need them for the regional, to fill a spot.”

Regionals begin Wednesday in Brownsville.

First, though, BD has a pair of games at home today, vs. Jefferson at 1 p.m. and vs. Watertown after that.

They’ll have plenty to work on in those two contests, Ziegler said.

“We didn’t play great baseball, so I’m not happy about that,” he said of feeling that his team gave away too many at-bats Friday vs. Fort. “But we did some good things, so we have some things to build on — but we definitely have a lot of things that we can get better at.”

BD, which is now 12-4 on the summer, struck first vs. Fort when Charlie Storhoff scored on an error in the second to go in front 1-0.

But Fort answered two innings later and scored twice to take a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Payton Gorr scored on a passed ball in the bottom half of the fourth to knot things up at 2.

Dillon Livingston went the final two innings on the mound, not allowing a baserunner while striking out two in order to allow BD to win it.

“In the last inning, we showed that we can adjust — we made them work in the last inning to kind of scrape two across there to finish it off,” Ziegler said.
