NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The best teams in Wisconsin haven’t been much match for Beaver Dam’s prep girls basketball team the last two years, so the Golden Beavers headed west to try out competition from a different state.

The results so far have been the same.

Freshman Maty Wilke scored 14 points and a pair of juniors — University of Wisconsin verbal commit Tara Stauffacher (11) and University of North Dakota commit Aly Van Loo (nine) — combined for 20 as Beaver Dam won rather easily over Farmington (Minn.) on Thursday night in its opener at the St. Olaf College Holiday Classic.

And then Friday night, Wilke hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-best 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Golden Beavers to another double-digit win, this one a 61-48 victory over Northfield (Minn.).

Junior Paige Schumann, an Eastern Illinois verbal commit, had eight points, five assists and three steals for the Beavers on Friday, while sophomore Jada Donaldson had nine points, six rebounds and five assists.

The key to the win Friday was defense, as Beaver Dam locked down in the second half and held the Raiders to just 23 points after halftime to pull away after trailing 25-21 at the break.

Northfield, the third-ranked team in Class 3A in Minnesota, suffered its first loss Thursday, falling to Eastview (Minn.) — ranked second in 4A — by the score of 60-52.

Meantime, Farmington — the ninth-ranked team in 4A — is now 7-2 after suffering a 56-47 loss to Grand View (Minn.) on Friday.

Beaver Dam is now 9-1 this season, after winning every game by double digits a year ago en route to a perfect 28-0 record and the WIAA Division 2 state championship.

The Beavers conclude play at the Holiday Classic this afternoon vs. Hopkins (Minn.), the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

Hopkins suffered a 66-56 loss to Eastview on Friday, but still enters Saturday’s tilt as the No. 14 team in the country in a MaxPreps poll and No. 17 in the nation according to computer-generated rankings by MaxPreps.

Beaver Dam’s only loss so far this year is a 60-51 defeat at the hands of Maine West (Ill.) — one of the elite teams in the top division of its state — out of the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines on Dec. 2.
