MEQUON — Junior Marcus Domask led the Warriors with a game-high 27 points to go along with team highs with nine rebounds and eight assists as the Waupun prep boys basketball team defeated Milwaukee Pius XI 61-54 at the Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout on Wednesday.
"Their record doesn't represent them real well, but they're pretty darn good," Waupun head coach Dan Domask said. "There was a reason why they matched us up with them ahead of time for those purposes."
The Warriors (8-0) — the fourth-ranked team in Division 3 according to the WisSports.net Coaches Poll — built a 26-21 halftime lead over the Popes (2-7) in the tournament held at Concordia University. Waupun pushed its lead to as many as 15 points with about 5 minutes to go in the game before Pius tightened things up.
"It probably wasn’t quite as close as the final score (indicates), but when you look at the halftime scores … it looks tighter," Dan Domask said.
Reece Homan had 12 points and five rebounds and Trevor Vande Zande added had 11 points for Waupun.
Bilal Shabazz led Pius with 22 points, while the Popes' Preston Maccoux had 18.
"Pius is a really good team and a really good program," Dan Domask said. "They have a couple of college-caliber players on their team. It was a nice win for us."
