Things went so well for Beaver Dam’s prep girls swimming team Tuesday night against Portage, even the Golden Beavers’ losses were wins.

BD won eight of 11 events en route to a 97-73 victory over the Warriors in a Badger North Conference dual meet held at the Dodge County YMCA. But that dominance wasn’t even the highlight.

“The 100 free was probably the best race of tonight ,” BD head coach Jenna Wisdorf said of the personal records turned in by Morgan McGauley (second in 1 minute, 1.45 seconds), Sydney Foote (fourth in 1:02.04) and Molly Landdeck (sixth in 1:06.93).

That was one of the three events the Golden Beavers didn’t win, but it was indicative of the kind of depth they relied upon to win the meet. Beaver Dam took two of the top three spots in all three relays — including wins in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays — and swept the top three spots in the 200 individual freestyle to combine for more than a third (39) of its points.

“The B relays stepped up to get extra (points),” Wisdorf said. “That’s what I told them was going to win this meet — ‘We have to have depth; just winning your race isn’t enough; we have to have those girls in second, third, (and) fourth place step up.’

“And they really did that.”

Camryn Gosdeck and Liz Grenon each won a pair of individual events. Gosdeck claimed the 200 individual medley (2:46.57) and 500 free (6:48.97) and Grenon took the 50 free (0:27.98) and 100 butterfly (1:08.47), and were both on winning relays.

The other individual winners for BD were Morgan McGauley in the 200 free (2:16.24) and Foote in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.01).

The victory is the Beavers’ first in 50 weeks, coming nearly a year after they won their first meet in a number of seasons.

They hope it serves as a stepping stone for the weeks and months and years to come.

“This win this year is I think even bigger for us because we’re coming into a new conference, so we’re trying to set the tone,” Wisdorf said. “So yeah, it’s a big deal — it’s a big deal for these girls, and it’s a big deal for the program.”
