Man faces felony theft charges

By Brian D. Bridgeford / News Republic

A Sauk City man faces felony theft charges and up to 10 years in prison if convicted after investigators say he took more than $26,500 from the till at the Ho-Chunk Casino.

On Thursday William J. Kemp, II, 26, appeared in Sauk County Circuit Court by video conference link from the county jail. He was charged with a single felony count of theft in a business setting — more than $10,000. The charges stem from thefts from the casino’s buffet between Aug. 20 and Oct. 26, according to court documents.

In October, Sauk County Sheriff’s Department officers met with surveillance staff at the casino in response to a complaint about Kemp stealing money while he worked the cash register in the buffet. The casino investigators said he had been issuing customers old receipts and keeping track of the money in the till that wasn’t covered by receipts, records state. A casino surveillance person said they had video recordings of Kemp placing the money in pieces of paper which he would hide in a sock or elsewhere on his person.

A manager of the surveillance program estimated Kemp took more than $26,500 between the end of August and late October, according to the records.

In an interview with casino investigators, a county detective reports Kemp admitted taking the money. He reportedly said he used it to "get caught up on some bills," records state.

In court Thursday the judge informed Kemp of the charges against him and set a $400 cash bond requirement for his release. He is due back in court next Dec. 3, records state.

Kemp has been released from jail after posting bond, jail staff reported Sunday afternoon.
