Subject is funding as legislators join school board meetings

By Christie Taylor / News Republic

Local state legislators will be joining the next two meetings of the Baraboo Board of Education for a dialogue on statewide education funding reform.

Sens. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, and Luther Olson, R-Ripon, will attend the Nov. 9 meeting. Reps. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo, and Ed Brooks, R-Reedsburg, will speak to the board on Nov. 23.

Board vice president Doug Mering said he invited the legislators following concerns raised at the board’s annual meeting. He said it was clear following the most recent budget process, in which Baraboo’s school levy rose by 8 percent to compensate for state cuts, that Wisconsin’s funding formula needed work.

"We’ve been at this for roughly 15 to 16 years ... and it’s always been playing catch-up," Mering said. "You cannot say it’s working."

Members of the public with questions for the legislators should send them to the board in advance of each meeting, he said.
