MADISON — An Illinois man was charged Tuesday with felony battery for allegedly delivering a blind side blow to a former Baraboo High School and University of Wisconsin basketball player that left him in critical condition. Sean N. Longabaugh, 24, of Lake Villa, Ill., was charged with aggravated battery for allegedly punching Darin Schubring in the head on Halloween night at the Main Depot, 627 W. Main St. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. Schubring, 42, a Baraboo native, played basketball at UW from 1986 to 1989 and played professionally in Europe. As of Nov. 3, a criminal complaint states, Schubring was unable to breathe on his own and a doctor told police that brain damage was likely. A UW Hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday, however, that Schubring was listed in good condition. Further information on his condition was not available. According to the complaint, bartender Jennifer Schank said Schubring bought a beer and was waiting for his change when a man dressed in a Wizard of Oz flying monkey costume, later identified as Longabaugh, began waving his arms in her face as she tried to give Schubring his change. She said Longabaugh continued to harass them, and Schubring gently pushed Longabaugh’s arms away as he reached for his change. As Schubring looked at Schank, Longabaugh punched Schubring in the left temple, the complaint states. Schubring fell backward to the floor. As of Nov. 3, Dr. Andrew Bauer told police, Schubring had a large bruise to his frontal lobe and to the back of his brain, according to the complaint.
