T-Birds take the lead
Ashley Schoenoff wanted to break a school record a week earlier in a double dual against Portage and Reedsburg. Maybe the timing wasn't quite right for that though. Tuesday's dual against Waunakee was the biggest dual of the season and Schoenoff's last chance to break a record on her home track this year. So she broke two. The Baraboo High School junior distance runner broke the school's 1,600 and 3,200 meter records Tuesday, and both the BHS boys and girls teams held off Waunakee to win the dual portion of the season. The T-Bird boys team won 80-66, and the girls team won 78-68. Schoenoff ran the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 9.49 seconds to break the previous record, 5:14.6, held by Amy Wickus since 1988. In the 3,200, Schoenoff ran an 11:18.6, which broke Erin Blum's record of 11:30.3 that had held up since 2000. "She had gone after the records last week, and for her to come back and beat them both resoundingly was really impressive," BHS girls track coach Joanna Hollenback said. "I think she ran two amazing races." Besides featuring two broken school records, the meet was also important in the conference standings. Both the BHS boys and girls teams were fighting to go into the conference meet in first place. The T-Bird boys improved to 6-0 in conference duals, and will be in first for the conference meet. The T-Bird girls improved to 5-1 in duals and are now tied for first. "We're glad to be in a great position going into the conference meet," BHS boys coach Tom Leaver said. "We just have to take care of business next week." Besides Schoenoff, Mya Flentje and Lacey Craker also won two events for the BHS girls. Flentje won both hurdles races, finishing the 100 in 17.9 and the 300 in 52.1. Craker swept the throwing events, going 36 feet, 11.25 inches in the shot put and 112-0 in the discus. For the Baraboo boys, David Piery and Justin Staedter both won two events. Piery won both hurdle events, finishing the 110 in 16.4 and the 300 in 43.0. Staedter won the shot put with a toss of 54-7 and the discus with a 147-7. The BHS girls had individual wins from Emily Zellmer, who cleared 4-8 in the high jump, and Kelsey Brinker, who went 31-7.25 in the triple jump. Baraboo also split the relays with Waunakee. The Thunderbird team of Chelsie Lee, Nyomi Defiel, Flentje and Brinker won the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.8. The BHS team of Defiel, Lee, Carly Trotter and Katie Sprecher won the 3,200 with a time of 11:31.8. For the BHS boys, David Kohnert won the 800 with a 2:03.6 and Matt Meyer won the 200 in 23.5. The Thunderbirds won three of the four boys relay races. Meyer, Dan Pfaff, Louis Ayensu-Mensah and Riley Arnold teamed up in the 800 to win with a time of 1:33.6. In the 1,600, it was Arnold, Michael Kohnert, David Kohnert and Jake Bachman winning in a tight finish with a 3:31.3. Baraboo's 3,200 team of Joel McVenes, Curt Helbing, Keegan Bobholz and David Kohnert ran uncontested to a 11:06.7. "I think they stayed focused, even after the 70-minute rain delay," Leaver said. "Waunakee's a good team, and they match up real well with us in dual meets." Baraboo freshmen, sophomores do well Mat Bebber's first-place finishes in the 800 and 1,600 meter runs helped the Baraboo High School boys track team edge Tomah in a freshman-sophomore invite, Monday at BHS. The Thunderbirds took first with 143.3 points to Tomah's 138 in the seven-team meet. In the girls meet, Baraboo finished second behind Wisconsin Dells, which had a dominating performance. Baraboo had 144.5 points, while WDHS had 181.5. Bebber won the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 11.1 seconds, and he took the 1,600 in 4:53.8. Jake Bachman won the 400 in 53.9. Denise Leaver, Gwen Simonson and the 3,200 relay team took first-place finishes for the girls. Leaver won the 3,200 in 11:55.5. Simonson won the discus with a distance of 87 feet, 11 inches. The 3,200 relay team of Nyomi Defiel, Kassi Sprecher, Kayla Bushweiler and Leaver finished their race in 11:12.9.
