BHS wins by nine

The Baraboo High School boys golf team is heating up.

Not even an hour-long rain delay could throw the Thunderbirds off stride, as they defeated Mount Horeb 165-174 on Tuesday.

Chris Siebert and Ryan Dietzman both shot 40s, T.J. Kaminski finished with a 42 and Jordan Taylor and Tyler Petty both came in at 43 in the most tightly packed team score of the season for the team.

And this was coming after shooting a 166 in a close loss to Reedsburg a day earlier.

"The bottom line was we were very happy with the win," said BHS coach Jim Stevens. "It's nice to get on the "W" side, especially having our four and fives shooting so well.

For Taylor, 43 was the best round of his high school career. It would have counted in any other dual this season, but Petty also had a great round and shot 43 to make it a tie for the fourth spot.

"It's nice when you have to drop out a 43," Stevens said. "It's very encouraging."

With the season winding down, Stevens is pleased with the way his team has progressed since some early outings where his team didn't meet the high expectations it had. Now, with the Thunderbirds shooting well, Stevens said there's still room for improvement.

Weather conditions forced the T-Birds to pack their schedule, which may have helped them find their groove. But that schedule has also meant practices have been few and far between.

"The more they get out and play, the more things they can correct in their play," Stevens said. "Chipping and putting, I think that's one thing we can practice and really cut our scores down.

"I told the kids afterward, just the idea that we continue to get better and we're all capable of shooting low rounds is really exciting."

BHS will play at Wild Rock Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells on Friday.

The Baraboo JV team defeated Mount Horeb 195-201. Jake Luther shot a 44 to lead the way, with Jake Smiley pitching in a 47 and Griff Kalepp shooting 49.
